Elvet Construction Consultants have been appointed by Durham County Council as the Project Manager and Site Supervisor to deliver a prestigious scheme at Chester-le-Street's Market Place, as part of a flood alleviation scheme that will bring new life into the town centre.
Elvet were appointed after a competitive tender process through Bloom.
The scheme has been awarded £2.7m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with a further £1.9m contributed by the Environment Agency and £1.5m from Durham County Council. The scheme involves flood alleviation works to a 90m stretch of the Cong Burn river, which runs underneath the town’s Market Place, which will be opened up in a bid to reduce flooding in the town centre. The existing Market will be relocated to the reinvigorated “red carpet” area of the Market Place, forming a flexible space for traders, and accommodating festivals and events.
The works, which will commence in January 2019, are due to be completed by January 2020. The scheme is being delivered using the NEC Option A Contract, with Elvet Consultants appointed as the NEC Project Manager and NEC Site Supervisor.
